Lord of mercy, Lisa! I feel *drained* just by reading your workout today! HUGE congrats on jogging 2 freaking miles!!!!! WOW!

The extra walk was nothing...I just considered it an *extended* cool down! LOL Much harder to jog an extra 5 minutes than to walk an hour!!! I'm pumped now to do day 3 tomorrow!

    Happy Friday!

OK, so I ignored Lisa's challenge to begin my C25K last week while at the beach. I did take one day to walk to one end of the Ocean Isle, NC and back and another to do the same in the opposite direction which totaled about 14 miles. Walking barefoot on wet sand was a killer on my out-of-shape calves not to mention the bottoms of my feet!

I did however stay true to my word by starting today. I walked/jogged for about 30 minutes on a middle school track a couple miles from my house while listening to a C25K podcast to let me know when to switch modes.

An earlier post mentioned a link for a techno-based podcast to use while training. This morning I stumbled across c25k.com where a few other options are linked for music to exercise to. I used the music on Robert Ullrey's site which was sort of techno-ish, but with lyrics. I liked his voice-overs for the various modes rather than the chimes of the other techno version, plus he provided a little motivation throughout. I may try the Christian music version next time for a change, but I think my Christian music tastes may be a bit too aggressive compared to what is included on this site!

Anyway, I totaled 8 laps around a track for roughly 2 miles in 30 minutes. There were a few times my breathing rate went through the roof, but I think I can now say that I'm no worse for the wear and managed NOT to burn myself out on week 1, day 1! I liked using the track which makes calculating distance and improvement easier. I found a site with a nifty calculator to assist in figuring out times and distances based on the lane you ran in. I'm hoping I can continue to use the track after school starts in a couple weeks -- I'm assuming the track won't be used while the kids are in classes late morning.

I thought about starting yet another new C25K thread since most of you are already heading into the final weeks of your routine, but since Lisa was my original motivator, I felt compelled to add on to the end of this gang's thread! Looking forward to day two of week one...

Good for you for staring Eric! Sorry I haven't been around guys. I have a pretty bad cold so I haven't been able to work out much. Hope you are doing well though and that I can get back in the game soon.

bio-----How was Monday? I felt drained afterwards...lol...gosh, why do we put ourselves through this??????!!! Oh, yeah...it helps burn the fat and exercise is good for us.

Eric----14 miles barefoot??? Man, you're brave! So, you have soft feet now, right? And 2 miles in 30 minutes?? Wow! I'm speechless (that hardly happens, just to let you know that). I'm thinking you'll be able to get to that 3rd mile in no time. Thanks for sharing your start. Since you did start when you got back from vacation, I won't razzz you too much. Just keep on the look out for me popping up in the post that you're too tired to do your C25K because your dog's sister's brother's father's wife's exdog sitter's cat was stuck in a tree .

Study----that's okay! I'm glad you're here. Hope you feel better soon. It's best to make sure you're healthy!

I'll be working on week 7 this week starting tomorrow. We took the girls to Roaring Springs yesterday (my normal training day) and today we visited family all day (I nursed a sun burn---I'm dealing with it).

I'll be back tomorrow to post. Until then...

          Play hard!!!

Lisa, best of luck with week 7!!! I'm in awe!

Eric, glad to learn that you're starting this program. We're at different levels in this thread, but that doesn't stop us from supporting one another. If you wish to join us, feel free!

My Monday workout was BRUTAL! Bleh! This morning's workout was not much better. Ouch! I'm trying my best at week 6 this week, but I *will* be doing another round of week 6 next week. I'm not sure why my legs are not cooperating. I don't think it's overtraining, but I'm finding it especially difficult to jog this week.

Bio---Brutal. Now there's an adjective I could agree with as the weeks get longer! oh, the legs...yeah, I completely understand. They seem to sceam "I'm only going THIS far! And no further!". Best wishes for week 6!

              Irish---how's it going?

I decided to do week 7 again instead of trying out week 8 this week...good thing because I just barely got in a mile and half of jogging until I had to walk the rest of the time. I ended up getting in 2 miles all together, but I was wiped out. I'm worn out from the long weekend! I ended up taking 2 IB profin 20 minutes before my work out for the sunburn with a cup of water in hopes that would help---it did. Phew! Tomorrow's workout will hopefully be a better round.

              Have a great one!

Hello Ladies and Eric! haha! I'm back! First things first:

Lisa - YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!! Holy cow you're flippin' awesome at this program, you're an inspiration

Bio - I know what you mean by the legs not wanting to run. One thing I tell myself if I'm having issues is a phrase the Marines like to say (yeah I have a brother in the marines...soon I'll have 2!): "Pain is weakness leaving the body".

Vanessa - How's it going? How's that cold? What week are you on now?

Eric - Congrats on starting! C25k is such an awesome program! Thanks for those links to the music too!

Alright....so lets catch up on me Yeah so running during vacation totally didn't happen. I'm a treadmill runner and I don't like hot. Where I went for vacation was 86+ degrees with 65%+ humidity. Yeah I hid in the shade or inside with my three fans in my cabin (no airconditioning, now that's roughing it..haha!). I did walk everywhere so I was able to get a little excercising in. Also I was so busy the Friday before vacation that I didn't even get to do day 3 (yeah know the 20 minute jog). Needless to say I'm re-doing week 5. I started W5D1 today and it was tough. It seemed to so easy the first time around but a week of not running and not eating well made it that much harder. So I'm excited to get back on track and to finally finish week 5!

Total Time: 29 minutes Total Distance: 1.45 miles

I normally get more distance in because I typically do an 8 minute cooldown but I pretty much collapsed off the treadmill, haha!

Irish---Welcome home to here and your treadmill!!! lol....I'm sure it missed you too! oh, thanks. I'm just trooping along as you guys are. You'll be zipping along into week 7 before you know it---I'm sure I'll be waiting for you....lol...good for you not giving up on C25K completely when you came back from vacation and you just nailed the first day back nicely!!! Gosh I love that saying you posted....I've never heard of it before (I have no Marine friends/family....they're all Army and Navy and AirForce ) and it seems to make me smile. It's as if to say Pain has no mercy....

Alright girls (and guy)....it's mid week.....time to bring out the big and play hard!

Week 7, Part 2, Day 2 done for me....

                  1/4 mile walk
                  2 mile jog

I'm wiped out. I think 3 days in a row with this part of the training is going to be really rough. I couldn't think of any other way of doing it with the weekend chalk full of things that I have to do--and no time to do what I want to do. It'll work...i know it will (it better)..or I'll be the one on the floor next to the treadmill...

I need to apologize. I didn't intend to add testosterone to this thread! If you want to think of me as the hairy legged, deep voiced, Susan Powter haircut chick -- feel free.

Irish, I almost thought you had spent a week in NC when I read your post about heat and humidity, but then I decided that even North Cackilacky offers A/C in the hotel rooms...

Lisa, please understand it is only temporary if I think evil things about you for "motivating" me to do this program while my feet are pounding the pavement... (LOL)

I feel better now that W1D2 is complete, especially since it appears from everyone's stats that the amount of walking versus jogging may change, but (hopefully) the 30 minute time limit stays the same! I'm pretty worn out after 30 minutes. I still managed the 8 laps around the track -- I think I like the track because it helps me keep pace by setting mini goals as I'm moving (like reaching a certain point before an interval ends). I think I might grow tired quicker if I never got any closer to the wall in front of the treadmill no matter how long I ran! Then again, running on blacktop in NC at 12 noon in August is kinda crazy!

What's the secret to limiting pain in the shins? Maybe it's because of my 245 pound frame pounding repeatedly on my little, chicken calves, but my shins really get to hurting while I'm jogging. They don't continue to hurt during the walking or after exercising (ok, maybe they're still a little tender), but as soon as the jog begins again -- YEE-OW! Glad I'm not in the Marines -- might get disciplined for smacking the instructor for feeding me a line like Irish's!

W1D3 planned for Saturday morning. I'll be in touch ladies!

                      Hey everyone,
I tackled W5D2 today! It was really rough. I had an extremely hard time with the second 8 minutes. I followed some of the links Eric provided for podcasts and I'm going to try it tomorrow for the 20 minute run. I read a comment on the podcast site and someone said that they cover the timer on their treadmill with a towel so they don't know what time it is. I'm going to try that because I have the worst habit of watching the clock, since this podcast tells you went to walk or jog I'll try it.

Great job getting day 1 done, Eric! You could shave your legs, chest, and arms like Lance Armstrong . But it's not a requirement for guys, or gals for that matter, to join in on the C25K.

All right....I'll take all the blame for you getting your bum out there to get started...just watch those monosyllabic words that seem to fly out from no where as you reach the higher levels. You're doing great for beginning---2 miles in 30 minutes is quite fast. I'm impressed!

Shin splints were an issue with me last year. I had to get actual running shoes--I love shoes, but I hate parting with money, so it was a HUGE sacrafice to me. But I love my Nikes. I also read more up on shin splints and found some basic things that made sense to avoid them---slow down your pace in the beginning, warm up, and take the days off recommended to let the bones, muscles, and body heal. I should go back and read more on them...thanks for the reminder.

Yea, Irish!!! Working week 5 and look at that mileage!!!! Wow! You're doing awesome! Hey, I took your advise and I covered my treadmill with a towel. It worked. I was guessing how far I'd come a lot and peaked just a few times to see if I was right, but I wasn't starring at it all the time. Thanks!!

How's it going for the rest of you?

Week 7, 2nd time around, done for me. I think (again) I'll attempt the time for week 8 next week. Week 8 is 28 minutes of jogging straight through...I guess I'm already at that time this week, but I just had to see if I could up my mileage. That didn't happen, but at least my time is increasing...or at least staying the same

Today I did my warm up a bit different....
5 min warm up off the treadmill walking in place and stretching my legs out
                        30 minutes jogging

                        2 miles done.

Hey everyone! Finished week 5 finally!!! Yay!! I covered up my treadmill and used one of the podcasts that Eric gave a link in one of his earlier posts... Anyway it was pretty cool. I peaked at the clock once and I had 5 seconds left to my run, haha! I was so close to not peaking at all! Anyway the 20 minutes straight was very interesting. Somewhere in the middle of the run my endurance kicked in. It was like my mind and body were saying "this is nothing I could run forever!" I think that was about 12 months into the 20 minutes. However my last five minutes...not so much! I had a really rought time during my last stretch.

Even though I didn't peak at my clock my podcasts kinda gives you times... Since week 5 has three different days the podcast would let people who were on day 1, 2, or 3 know when their times were...so in that case I kinda knew how much I was running...

Good job Lisa!!!!! Keep on keeping on!

Today was the end of week 6, day 3 and I *will* do another round of it next week (and the week after if necessary!). During the longer jogging sessions, they are now officially slower than when I walk, especially from mid-way to the end. Legs just don't want to move, so I make 'em! hee hee!

Irish, my younger brother was in the marines, and he had all kinds of saying like that. They transformed a scrawny, chess-playing, nerdy, older sister-could-beat-him-in-arm-wrestling 18 year old into a muscular, older sister-can't-believe-what-she's-seeing-but-he's-still-a-nerd marine. I should ask him for some running advice. He runs now when he did not growing up.

Eric, you cracked me up with your Susan Powter comment! LOL I second Lisa's point about slowing down your jogging to ease up with the shin splints. We're putting a lot of force on our poor legs & feet, so slow & easy is the course of action to take. Good luck with W1D3!!

Lisa, week 8 sounds terrible! 28 minutes of running! YIKES! Well, I guess we gotta do it when it comes to our turn. Congrats on getting 2 miles done! You're Wonder Woman!!!!

Scarlet, hope you're feeling better! Summertime illnesses are a drag!

                            Hope everyone is doing well!!

                            Happy Friday!!!

Thanks to an unusually low humidity for a NC summer morning, I pushed a little harder in the beginning of W1D3 today. That early push allowed me to go a little further than my standard 8 laps on the track.

The guy on the podcast I use keeps talking about being able to talk while you're jogging. I don't know about that, but I certainly am not losing my breath like I was the first couple days.

I'm still in awe of what you ladies are posting for your workouts as I am finding it hard to believe I will ever be able to jog an entire 30 minutes at this point. Regardless, I'm planning on W2D1 for Monday. Off to get my new podcast!

I know what you mean Eric. I amaze myself every week at what I'm actually capable of accomplishing! I never thought I'd be able to do 20 minutes straight, let alone 90 seconds straightm, believe you me though that first 90 seconds was tough! It's awesome what you can do when you put your mind to it.

I've heard from many reliable (as in rediculously in shape people I know) sources that if you can have a conversation while jogging then you truly are in shape. I don't know if I'll ever get there but I'd like to!
