I'll join the back to basics club as well, hope what I'm doing will count as that
I will be going to induction level for a few days when it comes to carbs and am going back to unprocessed foods but from OWL (loved that yogurt I found but it has aspartame and I stopped losing )

I'm also hoping I can get back to excercising soon. I barely have had the energy to do more than get through the day for the past 6 months and Monday my doctor will confirm if an underactive thyroid is the reason.
keep your fingers crossed for me that that's the reason because it would mean me feeling exhausted all the time can be fixed

Anyway, shopping was expensive today, guess fresh and unprocessed food is more expensive than the easy stuff

I may have to work on the protein, I may eat too much of it. I do enjoy it, but it is all pretty fatty, skin on chicken, and so one. I fry my eggs in the bacon fat after I cook the bacon.
I will have to do fitday and see how much protein I am eating.
Had a good day today, 188 ounces of water once I finish this last glass, which will be finished soon. Ate good and my back is feeling much better today, which is great !!!
Day seven of low carb tomorrow, and day six of caffiene and sweetner free !!
I hope everyone has a great weekend !!!

    Good Evening, Friends

Stephie, I can just feel your confidence! That is such a great quality to have... it will bring you far. You're going to do just great.

Wow, Joy! While I've had first hand experience on what crappy shoes can do to you, I had no idea that crappy socks could cause such a problem. I'll make certain to steer clear of ratty socks.

At least you got to do some yoga. I still haven't gotten around to trying yoga yet. I will eventually. LOL... I saw a cartoon in a magazine the other day. Two women talking, and one of them says "No, I don't speak yoga... I speak pilates." That's kinda how I am. I'm betting that they share some moves, though. I've seen some clips of yoga videos on www.collegevideo.com and can tell some of it is similar. I love that you can watch clips of the exercise videos on that website... it has changed my mind about a few DVD's that I thought I wanted, and turned me on to some that I thought I wouldn't like.

Ok girl, let's talk about food. I know EXACTLY what you mean when you say that you don't like to talk much about addictions and struggling "out there" because of scaring people about the WOE. We know it's really not the WOE, though... addictions suck. And it TOTALLY sucks that you have to be so strict in Maintenance. While I have to be more stict than I want to be, it is nowhere near as intense as you are. Sorry about that! I'm glad to hear that your emotions are better, though - yay!

Ah, that damned coffee. It's unfortunate that it screws with you so much. At least if have to give up something you love, you are seeing a return on the sacrifice - you're losing again! It's remarkable that you can see such a difference, so fast. It's encouraging to hear that you can eat 2000 calories a day and not gain weight. You know, I'm struck by how many posts I read on the subject of not being able to get in enough calories. I have NEVER had that problem. Even now, I can (and do) out-eat my husband at every meal.

The protein thing - absolutely! Although I haven't used Fitday much lately, when I do track percentages it is solely for the purpose of making sure that my protein doesn't go over 30%. If fact, it is usually in the mid 20's. I do much better eating fat.

OK, it's been a long day and I have to work again tomorrow. At least we close at 4:00 instead of 7:00 on Saturday. Woo hoo!

    Have a great weekend, All!

Re: ~*~ Back To Basics ~*~

Mitzi-You're welcome. I got the blister because I had on OLD RATTY SOCKS! You know how they get those little pills on the material? Well, evidently mine had a pill right on the heel. The more I walked, the bigger the pill got and it rubbed one **** of a blister. I'd stopped a couple times and couldn't find it, but I sure did find it when I got back to the office...along with this HUGE blister. It figures, that just about the time I do manage to get myself UP and MOVING, something like that happens. Go figure.

I went to yoga yesterday though. Nice class, one hour.

Let's talk about FOOD. I am obsessed. Addicted. My addictions are much more acute now, too. I try not to be tooooo vocal "out here" because I don't want to scare newbies about the diet. Because I don't think it's the diet, it's ME. It's my addictions, it's my food intolerances, my chemical and EMOTIONAL makeup.

I've been eating the foods that I can tolerate. Meat, vegetables, etc. I've even managed to cut out butter and mayonnaise. This is one of the things that has me soooo upset (not enough to STOP doing it though) is that I'm having to be more strict in my maintenance. Ugh.

In some ways, though, my emotions are so much BETTER though. I don't walk around with the bad attitude. And, I'm not lashing out at family and friends. I'm on a nice, even keel with that, and it's because I'm not on a blood sugar rollercoaster or eating my addiction foods.

I quit coffee. AGAIN. I've lost almost a half pound a day since I did it too. We'll see if it keeps up. I don't know that I've necessarily had cravings FOR coffee, but I've been extremely anxious and RAVENOUS. I could eat my right arm hungry. I've eaten over 3,000 calories the other day! And lately, I've been eating over 2,000 almost every day. Yet, I am getting leaner. My belly fat is going away again...my little "one-pack" abs are starting to show again.

I've got to be very careful about the protein though. I can definitely tell a difference when I'm eating above 30% protein. That's the only other recommendation I can give everyone. Our bodies will convert excess protein into glucose, and treat it as such. One thing that will help is that you use fatty cuts of meat...and eat the fat. It's easier (and yummier) if you buy meats where you can see the small rippling of white in the actual meat (not necessarily on the edge). This will produce you a better tasting steak, pork chop, etc.--it will be more tender, juicy, flavorful and SATISFYING than a cut of meat that is purely lean.

Stephie, I definitely understand about the addictions... I'm proud of you for recognizing a potential problem and nipping it in the bud! I was very, very strict in OWL, and it paid off. I'm positive that your determination will pay off, too.

    HI Mitzy,
for me it comes down to addictions and the breaking of them. Every single favorate food I have, with few exceptions, are dairy based, especially desserts, so I felt it was somethign that if my body craves it that much, I might not need to be eating, same with nuts, for now, I will avoid them.
I may add both in later in limited amounts but for now, I am quite happy without them and doing great on my meat and eggs and veggies and salad. I am not missing a thing.
This time is about doing what I feel is the best for my body and making changes that will get me where I want to be !!
I am glad you are doing well, that is great news !! You are doing great on the running, that is wonderful !!
It sounds like you are in a good place and I do promise when the time is right, I will experiment with the nuts and the dairy, just not now !!!

    Greetings, All

Stephie, your goals are outstanding! Wow, there's a lot of items on that list... each of them are very important, too. Sounds like you have a plan! Just keep in mind that nuts and dairy aren't necessarily problems for everyone. I can eat hard cheese (like cheddar, swiss, provolone) and cream cheese. Cottage cheese and ricotta cheese bloat me and cause intense cravings, though. And nuts are a problem for a lot of people, but are a healthy food, too. So, just carefully experiment with them when the time comes. You may find one that you can tolerate.

Joy, thank you so much for sharing your expertise with Stephie. We sure do appreciate that! I am having a really hard time spreading myself around the board lately. I only have a little time, but lots of places on the board that I need to visit... I never know which ones to hit when I get a moment. So I appreciate the help. By the way, why did you get a blister on your walk? Did you have on the wrong shoes? I hope that it gets better soon.

Heidi, it's wonderful to hear that you are on track in the midst of everything going on around you. Well done, girl! It's getting soooo close - exciting!

Well, my food has gotten better during the last couple of days. And exercise is going well, too. Yesterday I rode my bike for 10 miles and did my Basic Ab Workout for Dummies DVD (I love that dvd!). Today I completed D3, W6, C25K. This is what it looked like:

    Brisk 5 minute warmup walk
Jogged 2.25 miles! Took 25 minutes
    Walked 5 minutes

Woo hoo!!! This was my longest interval of running without a break. I'm no speed demon, but I do try to keep good form while running. Yay, me!

Tomorrow, Friday, and Monday are days that I will have to work open to close at the boutique because my SIL and niece are going out of town. That means long days and little computer time. I won't be able to be here during the day, but I will definitely check in during the evening.

    Have a great Friday, everyone!

Another great day. Day five low carb and day four of no caffiene or sweetners. Withdrawel has been very rough but I know it is all worth it in the end !!
Lots of water, already at 105 ounces and will get a lot more in by bedtime, I aim for 200 ounces and I should be very close to that. I ended last night at 192 ounces. That does not count any water I had during the night as I woke up in real pain in my legs from withdrawel, and had to take ibuprophen and drank a big glass of water with that.
I hope everyone is having a great day today !!

    Good Evening, Everyone

Wow, lots of posts today! That's good. Participation in the thread seems to ebb and flow, but I think that's because we are all so busy right now. I am finding it very diffucult to squeeze in good computer time.

Shephie! Welcome to the group. Not to worry about missing my post in your journal. There is so much going on around the board, that it's very easy to miss a post. I'm just glad that you're here now.

Ugh, it's late and I need to go to bed. I'll make some time to post here tomorrow, because I've got some really long hours at the boutique starting Friday and will get very little computer time until next week.

    See you tomorrow!

    Stephie,

My daily menu looks like this, usually:
    Breakfast:
1/2 a 16 ounce bag of frozen cauliflower, steamed and mashed
2 extra large eggs fried in a tablespoon of lard (bacon grease, chicken grease, beef tallow, all are great too)

    Lunch:
1 10 ounce package of some frozen vegetable (broccoli, spinach, asparagus, or something like that)
6-8 ounce portion of fatty meat
butter, olive oil, walnut oil or lard as a fat on my vegetable.

    Dinner:
4 cups of "salad" of lettuce, peppers, jicama, mushrooms, tomato, cucumber, cilantro etc.
walnut or olive oil as the "dressing" salt and pepper OR mayo
8-10 ounce portion of fatty meat

Re: ~*~ Back To Basics ~*~

Okay, after reading through a good part of this thread I know what to do now !!
My goals for right now are

Keep my water at close to 200 ounces a day
    No dairy
    no nuts
    no sweetners of any kinds
so no diet soda or chrystal lite or so on, just water
No processed meat, exception being bacon a few days a week.
    pure meats and fish only.
I will add on excercise the first day I wake up feeling normal again, or Monday, which ever comes first lol !!

Okay, I was wondering with all the discussion of portions, how do you determine the right portion of say meat and veggies. Are two normal size chicken thighs and a cup and a half or so of cooked green beans acceptable ?
How many eggs and bacon for breakfast ?? I would love some imput on this subject. Like Sherri , I rarely eat after dinner and I am up very late, so it can be as many as five or six hours from dinner to bedtime on an average night.
    Thanks,
    Stephie

Hey, Mitzi! I'm so proud of you for your running and weight lifting and stuff.

I'm working on my food these days. Getting REALLY squeaky clean. I went for a 3 mile walk and worked up a HUGE blister on my heel. It's literally the size of my thumb! So, now I'm outta commission.

Somehow I missed your post with the invitation to this thread, i am so sorry. My first day or two back I was a bit out of it, and I never even answered your very nice post and I am sorry about that !! I do appreciate all your support. You are so inspiring with your success and you are always there to encourage the rest of us and I would have never blown off your post.
I would love to join this thread and be part of helping each other get back to basics and stay on track. I know how often I have fallen off a week or two in and I am determined to not do that again !!
Thanks for the invite and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone here and will go back and read the entire thread through.
    Thanks again,
    Stephie
