WOW! Great job BLAZING and self! I'll post the updated list a bit later today.

Today's discussion is about chapter 4 of DANDR. Most people fall into three categories of "disorders." Look back on your eating habits prior to Atkins. Which group were you?

From Chapter 4, DANDR, page 38:

GROUP A: "I Really Don't Eat That Much!"
*Are you overweight despite the fact that you don't eat that much?
*Do you follow standard weight loss diets to the letter, yet make no headway losing weight, or get stuck far short of your goal?
*Have you noticed that many slim people definitely consume more food and more calories than you do?
*Are you just plain unpleasantly hungry on low-calorie/low-fat diets?
*Do you find the amount of food you eat is really the least you can take in without feeling physically unsatisfied?
*Do you feel unfulfilled when you finish a so-called "balanced" meal?
*Do you find that when you eat the amount of food that feels just right, you don't lose--or you even gain?
*Do you find yourself losing and regaining the same 10 to 15 pounds?
*Do you gain weight even though you eat natural, low-fat foods?
*Have you often said, "I'm really very disciplined; it must be my metabolism"?
*Do you ever wonder if your weight problem could be hereditary?
*Do you eat to make yourself feel better?

GROUP B: "I Crave Food Always!"
*Do you have an inexplicable obsession with food?
*Do you have a habit of eating late at night after dinner?
*Do you have a tendency to binge?
*Do you constantly crave sweets, pasta, bread and other high-carbohydrate foods?
*Do you nibble all day long when food is available?
*Do you have a strong desire to eat again within two hours of eating a filling meal?
*Do you consider yourself a compulsive eater?
*Have you ever said, "I only wish I could control my eating behavior"?
*Do you wish you had more control over how much food you eat?
*Do you have specific symptoms of ill health, such as the ones I'm about to list, that diminsh or vanish as soon as you eat? Do you suffer from:
                  -irritability?
-inexplicable drops in your energy level throughout the day?
-often overwhelming bouts of fatigue, espeically in the afternoon?
                  -mood swings?
                  -difficulty concentrating?
-sleep difficulties--whether the need for lots of sleep or a habit of waking from a sound sleep?
-anxiety, sadness, and depression for which there's no obvious explanation?
                  -dizziness, trembling or palpitations?
-brain fog and loss of mental activity?

GROUP C: "I Can't Live Without This One Food!"
*Do you have a single food or beverage you feel you could not do without?
*Would you pass up an elegant meal to have your most favorite food instead?
*Is there a specific food or beverage that makes you feel better as soon as you consume it?
*Do you ever think, "I wonder if I could be addicted to that food/beverage"?
*Do you feel this way about a category of foods (sweets, soft drinks, dairy products, grains, for example)?
If most of your answers put you in GROUP A, you have a metabolic problem.
If most of your answers put you in GROUP B, you probably have some form of glucose intolerance.
If most of your answers put you in GROUP C, you probably have an addiction to the food or beverage you singled out--another term is "food allergy" or "individual food intolerance."

                  QUESTIONS:

**To which group do you belong? Are you a combination of more than one group?

**How long had you felt this way? (Did you have these symptoms for a few years, since childhood, since college, etc.?)

**How has Atkins helped to alleviate or eradicate these symptoms?

**Do you have an example of how serious/dangerous/unhealthy your behaviors were prior to Atkins?

                        QUESTIONS:

**To which group do you belong? Are you a combination of more than one group?

I am definitely GROUP B. I had forgotten about this little "test" until I started looking through DANDR for discussion ideas. When I was typing out the symptoms for GROUP B, I actually got chills. It was like Dr. Atkins had interviewd and observed me, and wrote down every crappy thing that happened to me. I would eat constantly, and secretly. My mind would be preoccupied with food, always carbs, and if I didn't eat within a certain time, I would argue, and scream, and become a monster. I had horrible mood swings where I would go from a sort of angry depression to a manic glee, once the carbs kicked in. Then after I came "down," I'd go back to a surly mood and have to eat more carbs to feel good again. I would also become exhausted after hour or two after lunchtime--so much so that I'd fall asleep in classes (when I was in college).

**How long had you felt this way? (Did you have these symptoms for a few years, since childhood, since college, etc.?)

I've had some of these symptoms since childhood, though in a very mild form. I had some symptoms of Graves Disease that mimiced these...now I'm wondering if a healthier diet could have prevented some of my horrible symptoms! When I was a teenager (when I was first diagnosed) I had horrible palpitations and trembling, so bad that when I was trying to hold my hand still, it would shake visibly from across a room. I also had insomnia at night and exhaustion during the day.

When I got into college and my eating habits became worse, I had EVERY SINGLE ONE of those symptoms EVERY DAY.

**How has Atkins helped to alleviate or eradicate these symptoms?

I'm no longer eating for emotional reasons or boredom. I eat when I'm hungry, and I feel good about it. I don't obsess about food. Even now, I'll have some days where I just go about my business, get my work done, then look at the clock and think "Holy cow, it's lunchtime already!" I really feel that sugar is a drug, and since I've gotten it out of my body, I can actually FUNCTION and be productive, rather than just living for food. I FEEL like a different person too--I haven't had that apres-lunch drop since I started. I have energy. My thoughts are clear (and if you think I'm muddled now, you should have seen me pre-Atkins! ), my migraines are gone, and I no longer have mood swings.

**Do you have an example of how serious/dangerous/unhealthy your behaviors were prior to Atkins?

Which day of my life would you like to hear about? Seriously, everyday I was living the life of an addict. I was secretive, I was careful, I was concerned about one thing--eating, and hiding the evidence.

In college, this was a typical day for me:

I would go to class, and eat a bagel with cream cheese on the way to class, or a couple of breakfast bars, or a muffin. After class, I would walk to McDonald's and order a breakfast bagel meal, supersized, with a large diet coke (you know those ones that look like buckets?). Then I would walk back to campus, and an hour later, I'd meet my boyfriend at the coffeehouse, where we'd have tea and scones or huge muffins. Then I'd go back to practice or rehearse, and I'd take a break and get a soda and something from the vending machine. A couple hours later, I'd meet my boyfriend for lunch. We'd eat fast food somewhere, so I usually ate a burger, and a huge order of fries, and more diet coke. Then I would to go class, or to work on campus, then go back for more rehearsals, and a couple hours after lunch, I'd hit up the vending machine and get another soda and another snack. In the evening, I'd either meet my boyfriend for dinner, or go with my music buddies to dinner. I preferred going with music friends, because that meant I would be able to eat another meal LATER without anybody knowing. So we would go eat fast food, or (sometimes with music friends), order 2 pizzas and breadsticks, and split it. At the end of the night, I would go home, and if I had eaten dinner with my boyfriend, I would eat a little snack. If I'd eaten with friends, I wouldn't tell Geoff how much I ate, and I would eat another dinner with him.

I shudder to think about this. I was probably eating junk every 2 hours. I felt like crap. My day was a bunch of constant highs and lows. I wasn't even concerned that this was unhealthy. My main goal was to feed my addiction, and to continue to keep it a secret. I was always able to hide my meals and plan it out so the most ANYBODY ever saw me eat was 3x/day, though in reality, I was eating about 5 huge meals and 4 large snacks a day.

I'll type this out AGAIN seeing as my stupid foot kicked the plug and turned my computer off just before i hit send! Though i think i should probably of skipped these questions, I'm not the typical overweight person.

                          QUESTIONS:

**To which group do you belong? Are you a combination of more than one group?

I'm not a member of any of those, I gained weight because i wanted to be fat - okay that sounds dumb, but i wanted to become unattractive to the opposite sex, putting on weight to me was the way to successfully do that.

Cant believe i just associated unattractive with being overweight - I, of course, dont think like that anymore, i was young and had problems and was not of sane mind.

**How long had you felt this way? (Did you have these symptoms for a few years, since childhood, since college, etc.?)

I probably shouldnt of answered these questions, I'm not normal. but i think y'all knew that already. I was 13 when i decided that i wanted to be fat.

**How has Atkins helped to alleviate or eradicate these symptoms?

Atkins has helped with lots of stuff, mainly my fitness but it cant eradicate those old feelings, i know they'll come back as i get slimmer, Atkins cant help me with that. Its why i fell off last time round, i got to the weight i'm at now and freaked out. I tried to maintain it but it was still too scary for me to handle. I think I'm a stronger person now. We'll see eh?

If most of your answers put you in GROUP A, you have a metabolic problem.
If most of your answers put you in GROUP B, you probably have some form of glucose intolerance.
If most of your answers put you in GROUP C, you probably have an addiction to the food or beverage you singled out--another term is "food allergy" or "individual food intolerance."

                            QUESTIONS:

**To which group do you belong? Are you a combination of more than one group?
I seem to have yes answers to all 3 groups, but C is probably the one with the most yes answers. I didn't normally pig out everyday, somedays I didn't eat much at all. Even when I had a stretch of those days I might drop a couple of pounds, but not any more than that. But I had days where I would just gorge on a few particular foods--ice cream, cokes, chocolate and potato chips. Anything chocolate was my downfall. Also, anything with white flour in it gives me severe allergy symptoms.

**How long had you felt this way? (Did you have these symptoms for a few years, since childhood, since college, etc.?)
I've always since childhood been a chocoholic. It got worse in college and during stressful situations. My life has been pretty stressful for quite a while.

**How has Atkins helped to alleviate or eradicate these symptoms?
If I have anything with white flour in it, I get stopped up and sneeze. Since I haven't had it with Atkins, my sneezing and breathing is much better. Also, milk products give me allergies. I didn't notice that I had the problem until I was on Atkins and I can breathe again. I think taking the magnesium tablets have helped my chocolate cravings. TOM, I'm still ready to hurt somebody for chocolate, though.

**Do you have an example of how serious/dangerous/unhealthy your behaviors were prior to Atkins? My blood pressure and blood sugar levels were getting out of hand before Atkins. I'm sure having constant allergies wasn't helping my overall health, either. I have so much more energy and just feel more in control of my emotions and eating now. This WOL has really increased my quality of life.

Emma, I understand where you come from about using weight to hide. I've been there and still struggle to find better ways to handle my insecurities and fears. It's not easy, but I know a Wild Woman like you can do it!

Well, I actually gained weight this week. Add in .6 lbs for me. My first week at 50 net carbs. I can't even blame it on TOM! LOL Guess I better watch my wine intake. Just guessing it is water weight. I have not taken my measurements yet, because I couldn't find the measuring tape, but will post that tomorrow. Hopefully those will look better.
