*Do you know someone who can "eat all they want" and never get fat? How has this affected your self-image/self-worth/self-esteem? Do you ever feel "It's NOT FAIR!"?

Hmpf, I married that someone. He lives on sweetened tea and eats a couple of Little Debbie snack cakes a day. He never drinks water, rarely eats fruit or veggies, works as a locomotive engineer (sitting), and never exercises. I've jokingly accused him of practicing voodoo and projecting his calories to me. His dad and brother are even thinner than he is.

*Do you think the people who can "eat all they want" are as healthy as they might seem, or are they slowly killing themselves? Is this an example of "skinny fat?"

Yesterday really brought this into perspective for me. After work yesterday, he fished with a friend for 4 hours. Once home, he collapsed on the couch and griped because his friend didn't have seats on the boat and he'd had to stand for 4 hours. His legs hurt.

Mind you, I had just done 7 miles on a Gazelle, 5 miles on a bike, 50 crunches, cooked supper, and straightened the house. While he is sitting on the couch, I am still buzzing about the house. He was also ready for bed earlier than I was. It was a big "AH HA!" day for me.

Oh, and I just have to smugly add that I always stand while fishing! <smirk>

*Do you think you're eating more, less, or the same, volume-wise, than you ate previously?

Definately less! I constantly grazed between meals prior to getting back to this WOL. I was one of those folks who would eat the equivilant of a meal while cooking, then sit down do the actual meal. Now I do well to have even one snack a day.

*Since it's not how much you eat, but WHAT you eat that counts, what was a typical day's menu like for you, pre-Atkins? Plug this menu into fitday and see what the nutritional info is.

Oh gosh, I wouldn't know where to start! I never paid a bit of attention to servings and made constant trips to the kitchen for handfulls of this and bowlfuls of that. There were days I kept the toaster warm just with my buttered toast binges.

*Have you always been confused by your eating problem? What I mean is, are you a determined, focused, hard-working, responsible individual who feels in-control of all aspects of their life except food and weight?

I don't know how to answer this, either. On a day to day basis, I would say that I'm not particularly hard-working or focused, however, once I do focus on something, I go full speed ahead and can't stop until it's not only done, but as perfect as I can possibly make it.

It's no surprise to me that I am overweight. I'm just an all or nothing kind of person. I've either got my head completely in the game, or I'm in a full downward spiral.

Excellent questions, Jules! Who knew homework could be so fun?

*Do you know someone who can "eat all they want" and never get fat? How has this affected your self-image/self-worth/self-esteem? Do you ever feel "It's NOT FAIR!"?

A few people. It doesn't really affect me. I know everyone is different and thats okay with me.

*Do you think the people who can "eat all they want" are as healthy as they might seem, or are they slowly killing themselves? Is this an example of "skinny fat?"

I think most are pretty healthy. I think they probably have a high metabolism and burn most of what they eat.

*Do you think you're eating more, less, or the same, volume-wise, than you ate previously?

      About the same.

*Since it's not how much you eat, but WHAT you eat that counts, what was a typical day's menu like for you, pre-Atkins? Plug this menu into fitday and see what the nutritional info is.

This is from January 29, 2006. This was an average day.
      Calories- 2045, Fat-58g 26%, Carbs-324 gm 53%, Protein- 109 gm 22%
      Fiber One, skim milk, banana
      Oatmeal Creme Pie
      Can tuna, salsa, corn chips
fat free vanilla pudding, half banana,
      Beef stew, beans
      4 oatmeal choc chip cookies
      2 diet cokes

*Have you always been confused by your eating problem? What I mean is, are you a determined, focused, hard-working, responsible individual who feels in-control of all aspects of their life except food and weight?

Yes. I really don't know why I used to eat like I did. I had no control. I would try to eat healthy, then I would eat some junk the next bite. I was so disgusted and dissappointed with myself. I will never let that happen again. Now, I'm in control!

My friend Britney is this way, She’s a size 0 and eats more the two 400 pound grown men. Not to mention she smokes and drinks beer, never excersies…..you know what I mean!

*Do you think the people who can "eat all they want" are as healthy as they might seem, or are they slowly killing themselves? Is this an example of "skinny fat?"

I think some people are blessed and their bodies just burn everything and anything! For most people I do agree that they’re slowly killing themselves.

*Do you think you're eating more, less, or the same, volume-wise, than you ate previously?

Definately More!!! Yea I never ate, maybe coffee in the morning and that was pretty much it. My doctors told me my metabolism was none existing!

My best friend Teresa when I was growing up. She was always making herself eat as she would drop weight like crazy if she didn’t. She also wasn’t very active and I always envied her for that. My father’s family-all the males were tall and thin (except dad)-all the women short and plump. My uncle Jack could put away half a dozen eggs and a half loaf of bread every day for breakfast and never gain an ounce although he also was totally active even into his nineties. My aunt and I who were both heavy would watch him and be angry. My brother too was called bones as he could eat like crazy and never gain. My kids would call him the snake as he would finish his plate and every one else’s and never gain an ounce. He also was sedentary.

I think that bad eating generally catches up with you eventually but maybe have been genetically given a head start.

*Do you think you're eating more, less, or the same, volume-wise, than you ate previously?
It’s about the same-just different things-less cheese, crackers and bread which are my downfall.

            Oh leader?

I have a discussion. I noticed the talk of carb intake over at Adenas place. I know she's trying to reduce the carbs, I'm trying to reduce the carbs and so are many others. Then, there are those who are afraid to bump up the rungs. I just checked my fitday since this started this challenge I average 50 per day. Some days up to 57, other as low as 47. In my head I wanted to do 40, but I also wanted to bump up my veggie intake because I learned so much from the Veggie Challenge. My percentages have been pretty right on.

I want people to realize that it is important to increase your daily carbs until you reach the point where you no longer lose weight, then back off a little. It's a tough thought!

Personally, even though the 50's or 57's freak me out, I know I'm eating very healthy right now.

I'm the same way! Always planning my next meal! I lay in bed at night and plan tomorrow! Takes me a little longer now, but at least it's healthy! AND, I usually eat lunch at like 11:30 because my soap is on and I love nothing better than eating my lunch while watching it and I've spent all morning waiting for it!! Food still controls me in some way but it's not a bad way.

                Dear Silly girl,
                I have a question.

I want to move up also, but right now my weight loss at 20 carbs is about a pound every 2 weeks. If i move up, will my weight loss go to a pound every 4 weeks? that would drive me nuts....so i am petrified of more carbs, panicked if i go over 20.....what should i do?

NO! Not at all! That's why I want to have this discussion. Seriously, and others will vouch for this, when you bump up the carbs according to the food rungs, you will continue to lose weight and in many cases doing so jump starts your loss again. I was stuck at 20 for like a year and a half. When I got brave and starting eating, I was able to reach my goal.

A year and a half? That is a long time to do 20 carbs. I feel bad for doing it for 7 weeks. I guess I am ready to add the additional 5 carbs in...mainly in veggies right?

Therefore it took me forever to lose 13 pounds!

I feel this way too, especially since I recently decided to lower my goal weight. I KNOW I can eat 50+ grams and still lose--inches at least-- but I tend to hover around 40- something net.

It IS scary, but since I am enjoying my food choices so much and exercising more than ever, I'm just kind of leaving well enough alone. I also feel great!

I think I may have had too many vegetables last night (I was probably 3 or 4 carbs over 20), so I cracked down today! Instead of having veggies for two out of three meals I had veggies for one meal and a snack. I can't help it, I looooove cauliflower :]
*Do you know someone who can "eat all they want" and never get fat? How has this affected your self-image/self-worth/self-esteem? Do you ever feel "It's NOT FAIR!"?
When I was younger, I had a friend who would always come over to my house after our swim practices to have a snack with me. I would eat the same things as her, and we did the same activities (almost exactly the same, since we were in the same age group). She was skinny as a button and I was a little on the chubby side. At the time I didn't think it was fair, but looking back on it a couple years ago I thought it was. Now I realize she had an extremely fast metabolism, and mine mirrors my parent's: nice and slow. Now I'm okay with it. I dunno, but I have a lot of skinny friends who eat a lot--and some skinny friends who eat normal. *shrug* It's just one of those things.

*Do you think the people who can "eat all they want" are as healthy as they might seem, or are they slowly killing themselves? Is this an example of "skinny fat?"

I don't know if I would phrase it as "slowly killing themselves," but I do believe that they could make an effort to evaluate their situation. If they eat the bad foods now, where will that put them in the future?

*Do you think you're eating more, less, or the same, volume-wise, than you ate previously?

I would say less, simply because I'm not hungry as often, and I've stopped eating when I'm bored or when others are.

That is a TON of carbs. I took this from one of my food entries while I was living on-campus at college. The sushi was homemade, so at least it was somewhat better for me than store-bought sushi, but still...

Nope. My whole family is large, so I accepted it (for a while) just as part of who I was. They all got the gastric bypass surgery, but I want to take control of it before I get to that stage.

Anyways, down 6 pounds total (yay!) and 16 inches total! I'm pretty amazed :] I'm wary about the inches, just in case I'm not good at measuring yet, but even if you take away 5...that's still 11 inches lost! I'll go with 16 because I'm semi-confident in my measuring skills :]

jeans, don't sweat it, the extra veggies were in carb form. Also, it's best to spread them throughout the day, so you're A-ok!

Totally-- my DH is like this. At first I was weirded out about it, but then I took something Dr. A wrote to heart. It went something like this: Once you've been overweight, you'll ALWAYS be pysiologically overweight, even if you aren't physically. I will always have to be aware of food and food choices, unlike someone who has never had a weight problem.

*Do you think the people who can "eat all they want" are as healthy as they might seem, or are they slowly killing themselves? Is this an example of "skinny fat?" I dunno...my DH is a rail and doesn't have the best habits. But he's got a clean bill of health from the doc, and is as fit as he was ten years ago.

*Since it's not how much you eat, but WHAT you eat that counts, what was a typical day's menu like for you, pre-Atkins? Plug this menu into fitday and see what the nutritional info is. Wow, what a good question.

B-- Cheerios with whole milk and a banana
                              S-- yogurt
                              L-- sandwich
                              D--Spaghetti
                              Cals: 1340; Fat: 37; Carbs:186 (!!!!!); Protein: 69

I counted calories after I got to goal (and maintained before 2 years before finding Atkins and actually getting to EAT!).

*Have you always been confused by your eating problem? What I mean is, are you a determined, focused, hard-working, responsible individual who feels in-control of all aspects of their life except food and weight? Yep...but now I"m feeling better, slowly. I have to keep telling myself that I'm okay, that I don't have to be thinner to be fit, that I have a large frame and might just have to be okay right around where I am. It's hard, because 130s are not where I envisioned my weight settling. Everytime I give it another go, I end up feeling a little crazed, and end up restricting too much. I am hoping to lose more, but slowly and healthfully, if it is still possible for me to lose at all. We'll see.

                                Silly, you're right, excellent topic!

I will use myself as an example!

For a while, I was stuck around 30g carbs, deathly afraid that I would stop losing weight if I went any higher. Which of course was ridiculous. The closer you get to your CCLL, your weight loss will GRADUALLY slow down. It won't come to a screeching halt. So why on earth was I afraid to go up if I was losing 3 pounds a week??!??!??!

Luckily, I listened to ValidRouge, I listened to Adena, I listened to Sillygirl, and started trying to find my CCLL. I alternated going up carbs and going up rungs. I would go up 5g one week, and stay at that carb level for at least 2 weeks. If I lost weight after the first week, I'd go up a rung. It is important to make sure you're not doing BOTH in the same week.

Anyway, I did everything in 2-week increments to make sure that exercise, TOM, etc. wasn't a contributing factor. Eventually I made it through all the rungs. I'm at rung 9 now, and STILL adding carbs.

I haven't found my CCLL yet, but I CAN EAT 85g PER DAY AND STILL LOSE WEIGHT AND INCHES. I am predicting that I will be a person who can eat 100g a day and still lose.

DO NOT be afraid of carbs. When I started adding carbs, my weightloss accelerated! You NEED to do OWL properly to make this a lifestyle. That means finding your CCLL and eating more than 20g carbs a day!

Once we come back from vacation, I will resume the CCLL search, though I admit, I think I'm getting pretty close to my limit. When I'm not searching for my CCLL (and planning my foods to be an exact number of carbs each day) I generally eat in the high 60s-low 70s. I feel really comfortable with this--I know where my limits are (so far) and I know what foods I can eat. I AM NEVER AFRAID TO EAT. I AM NEVER AFRAID TO GO ON VACATION. I AM NEVER AFRAID TO GO OUT TO EAT.

I think a lot of "cheating" could be avoided if people simply chose to start OWL, follow it properly, and find their CCLL.
