Here is the discussion prompt from chapter 3 for today. Tomorrow, we'll go back to chapter 2:

From DANDR, Chapter 3, page 34:

Now we are going to get to the bottom of a mystery and one of the great inequities of life. I bet you know people who eat more than you do, exercise less and yet never seem to put on a pound. They're not lying about the amount they eat any more than you are. They do eat a lot. Maddening, but true.

Instead of envying them, realize that these slim friends are actually cause for celebration. The fact that they are not fat is living, breathing proof that being overweight needn't mean you're greedy, weak-willed, lazy or self-indulgent. Instead, in all probability, it may mean you are only metabolically less fortunate than they are. Doesn't that make a lot more sense? Most people eat when they're hungry and stop when they're full. And if that's the case, how could they be overeating? They're doing what their bodies tell them to do.

Which is why the critical factor is not how much you eat, but what you eat. And if you're overweight, the what is likely an excess of carbohydrates.
                DISCUSSION PROMPTS:

*Do you know someone who can "eat all they want" and never get fat? How has this affected your self-image/self-worth/self-esteem? Do you ever feel "It's NOT FAIR!"?

*Do you think the people who can "eat all they want" are as healthy as they might seem, or are they slowly killing themselves? Is this an example of "skinny fat?"

*Do you think you're eating more, less, or the same, volume-wise, than you ate previously?

*Since it's not how much you eat, but WHAT you eat that counts, what was a typical day's menu like for you, pre-Atkins? Plug this menu into fitday and see what the nutritional info is.

*Have you always been confused by your eating problem? What I mean is, are you a determined, focused, hard-working, responsible individual who feels in-control of all aspects of their life except food and weight?

*Do you know someone who can "eat all they want" and never get fat? How has this affected your self-image/self-worth/self-esteem? Do you ever feel "It's NOT FAIR!"?

*Do you think the people who can "eat all they want" are as healthy as they might seem, or are they slowly killing themselves? Is this an example of "skinny fat?"

OH YES! My boyfriend, Geoff, is one of these people. His whole family is like that--they have the metabolism of hummingbirds. I always felt SOOOO self-conscious when I would go to their house. But I realized that just because they are thin doesn't mean they are healthy. Geoff's brother is quite healthy--he eats a LOT of fruits and veggies, and watches his carb intake (he's not on Atkins or officially LC, it's just what he does.) The rest of the family eats refined sugars and flours like it's going out of style. They are definitely what I would call "skinny fat"--skinny on the outside, but with an unhealthy amount of body fat.

*Do you think you're eating more, less, or the same, volume-wise, than you ate previously?

I know I eat less, but I am DEFINITELY not depriving myself. When I get hungry I eat--whereas before, when I was bored, I ate; when I was sad, I ate; when I was happy, I ate; when I was angry, I ate. Now I've given all that emotional eating up, and I eat when I'm hungry. I still eat a sizeable amount of food, but I usually burn a LOT of calories during exercise and so my hunger is just my body needing food. Also, much of my food intake is veggies and fruit, which are not calorie-dense foods like my old favorites.

*Since it's not how much you eat, but WHAT you eat that counts, what was a typical day's menu like for you, pre-Atkins? Plug this menu into fitday and see what the nutritional info is.

I actually did this yesterday. It's pretty disgusting and very sad. Here is a typical day's menu from last year at this time:

4 HUGE buttermilk pancakes with chocolate chips, bananas, syrup and butter
                      10 large chocolate chip cookies
                      1/2 frozen pepperoni pizza
                      1/2 bag of potato chips
                      2 bacon double cheeseburgers
                      2 orders of curly fries
                      1 chocolate malt
                      8 cans of soda

                      NUTRITIONAL INFO:
                      9036 calories
                      450g fat
                      1025g carbohydrates
                      39g fiber
                      245g protein
                      986 NET CARBS

I am seriously feeling ill just looking at that info, and I feel sick when I think back to how horrible I felt during that time. I would feel upset or bored, so I would gorge myself. I'd feel good for the insanely short amount of time it took me to inhale the food, and immediately after finishing, I would feel sick and bloated and disgusted with myself. So to make myself feel better, I'd have a cookie, or two, or a dozen. It never stopped.

*Have you always been confused by your eating problem? What I mean is, are you a determined, focused, hard-working, responsible individual who feels in-control of all aspects of their life except food and weight?

VERY confused. I was determined and successful, and I could accomplish whatever goals I set my mind to...yet I was closing in on 300 pounds. Why was I such a failure with food? How did I let myself get this way? What did others think of me as a person--did they see me as weak-willed, lazy, sluggish, stupid, greedy, simply because I was fat?

*Do you know someone who can "eat all they want" and never get fat? How has this affected your self-image/self-worth/self-esteem? Do you ever feel "It's NOT FAIR!"?
Yes, don't we all know someone like that? I know it's in their genes. I've learned it's all relative. When this SIZE ZERO person tells me she's gained 2 pounds I used to think "what nerve telling me that", and when she shows me clothes she's bought, in my eyes they appear to be kid size. However, as I now know 2 pounds to one person is 10 to another. Gaining pounds isn't a good feeling for anyone. So no, it doesn't affect me.

*Do you think the people who can "eat all they want" are as healthy as they might seem, or are they slowly killing themselves? Is this an example of "skinny fat?"

Not all thin people eat all that they want with bad for you food. I sometimes wonder if it's a mental thing. Naturally thin people may not feel as passionate or obsessed with food as I am! They just eat to nourish themselves. I can't wrap my head around that one.

*Do you think you're eating more, less, or the same, volume-wise, than you ate previously?
I'm definitely eating much more than I used to. The difference is that now I eat healthful foods. Obviously I can eat more if I eliminate the junk.

*Since it's not how much you eat, but WHAT you eat that counts, what was a typical day's menu like for you, pre-Atkins? Plug this menu into fitday and see what the nutritional info is.

N/A - been low carb for about 10 years now

*Have you always been confused by your eating problem? What I mean is, are you a determined, focused, hard-working, responsible individual who feels in-control of all aspects of their life except food and weight?

I'm the type that when I make up my mind to do something, I do it and never look back. It's not confusing, I know when I'm eating for wrong reasons. I am obsessed with food, I love to cook, I love even more to eat. I do think that focusing on this has definitely helped me maintain control in other areas of my life. It takes perserverance and constant work just like life itself.
