I think we're off to a great start! We need to lose 70.8125 pounds a week for the nest 8 weeks to meet our goal! YES, it's doable. Maybe Julirama and I can design a niffty badge or something cool like that....

hi everyone! barb, you look fabu! thanks for posting your pics. as far as the book discussion, i have been on all the diets--weight watchers, nutri-system, jenny craig, the rice diet, the cabbage soup diet, the starve myself diet, the grapefruit diet...and now atkins. the only one i have ever been successful on was atkins. i'm not going to say it's because of the carbs, i'm going to say it's because i NEVER felt good and satisfied with the food i was eating and so i was not able to follow these diets precisely for more than a week. weight watchers i did lose weight on BUT i was doing the low carb version, so i'm not even sure it counts!! lol...

i'm skeptical that our food pyramid is ever going to change. i do believe we have far too many powerful special interest groups involved in it and they will not allow a change to happen.

i am really liking this challenge. thanks again julie.

Baarb --- holy tiny waist, Batman! You look great.

Paula -- Don't get discouraged. Hormone issues can definitely affect your weight. Keep on keepin' on, it will turn around!

Julie -- Can you please add that I have lost 1.8 pounds to the roster? Thanks!

Don -- Great job on the 3 pounds!

I have been on Weight Watcher's in the past. I did lose weight. My best friend still does Weight Watcher's and she has great success and is really good at maintaining her weight loss. My main problem with WW was that I was ALWAYS hungry. I am a home health nurse and so I practically live in my car. I remember packing food to take with me for WW and I would, literally, have something to eat and look at the clock and think, "In an hour I can eat a couple more points." The second I was done eating I would obsess about what I could/would eat next. When I went on Atkins in 2003, right after I failed on WW, I would eat my breakfast and go do visits with clients. Next thing I knew I would look at the clock and think, "Crap, I NEED to eat, it's been six hours!" Being hungry and food obsessed was the deal breaker for me. That is why I love Atkins so much. It is the one and only diet that works for me!

I took a REALLY long lunch today and went shopping. I bought a dress, a pair of capris and a skirt ---- ALL size 6!!!!!! Yay!

AARRGGHHH!!! as Charlie Brown would say.....I had to get 3 layers of stiches in my back today on my mid shoulder and the doc said no exercize, no pushups, crunches, no dancing....for 3 WEEKS....so i have to drop out of my push up and abs challenge....and all work i did....
But there is a light at the end of the tunnel.....She said I could ride my recumbent bike, so I will have to really push that one...i'll ride it everytime i read and everytime i watch t.v. But, I have to wait 72 hours to do it.....so lets hope and pray no weight sneaks in, in 72 hrs...

Paula, hang in there, last week I stayed the same weight, but lost 5.8 inches....still don't understand the whole scale thing.....

by the way, what does TOM mean?

Take care of yourself though, you don't want to re-injure your mid shoulder more by taking on too much too fast.

As Julie said, its gonna be a long 72 hours.

Michelle - OUCH! How on earth did you do that??? I'm sorry to hear it. Don't sweat the challenges, they're will be plenty of exercise challenges once you're healed.

Michelle and Ann -Thanks for your words of encouragement. It was a whole morning emotional meltdown but I'm better now.

I, too, am skeptical that our food pyramid will ever change. With breakfast cereals, breads, snack foods, and fast food being so lucrative, I just don't see it. There is just too much money at stake.

I really can't see Atkins being accepted as a "normal" anytime soon. Maybe ever. There is simply too much misinformation out there and too many willing to be misinformed. For some folks fat=FAT. Period.

                              Better late than never...

*Do you think that the food pyramid will change? When do you think that will happen?
I do think that at some point, the food pyramid will change. Maybe on the next iteration, whever that is. "Fat" won't be at the bottom (ever, ever), but I do think carbs could be displaced, or at least matched by fruits/veggies and or lean meats.

*Do you think that Atkins or Atkins principles will gain a place in the "normal" everyday diet?
I think so. Not Atkins (just too much stigma), but definitely Atkins-principles. More and more people recognize that bad carbs are bad, and that too many carbs in general aren't great for you. It's already happening, in many regards. Lots of current diets are Atkins/low-carb based. And even (some) people who don't diet are conscious of their carbs.

Hmm... or, for both the above questions, maybe I'm just overly optimistic (as usual!)??

*How do western countries (Canada, US, UK, etc.) compare with other countries in terms of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and what are the typical diets of these countries? I have heard that the French have the lowest rate of heart disease and obesity, although they eat the highest-fat diets.
I was in France for a week about 7 or 8 years ago. I did not try to watch what I was eating nor was I dieting. I didn't even necessarily walk a lot as I was there for a business trip, not plesure. But, I lost 3-4 pounds when I was there b/c of how I was eating! Conincidence? My money says no!
