Whoo Hoooo!!!! So much success! Wowsers! Congratulations to everyone who lost... that's so encouraging... I weighed the same today... again... but okay... I know the whoosh fairy is making rounds. It'll be my turn soon.
Walked this evening and did all my abs and push ups... can do them now without stopping... so cool! Also finished my little herb garden... have always wanted to plant one... hope it stays beautiful. ( I bought all the plants pregrown not seeds)
Keep up all the great work everyone. You all motivate me to stay strong and carb free... (you know what I mean...)

      Hello everyone

Just wanted to say welcome to all the newcomers and well done to those who lost lbs and inches - they are really falling off!

I have lost 1.5lbs so far - which is amazing for me! I have my photos in the shop to be developed but the guy behind the counter told me the machine was broken AFTER filling out my form. So I might have them by this pm I might not. Digital is looking very appealling right now...

Have a good stong Atkins day everyone!

Welcome to all those who joined during the weekend. Oh, and a big congratulations to all those that have had a loss this first week. That's awesome ladies and gents.

All I can report for now is that I am a flat 199. What a relief that it did stick.

Julie, I will be on vacation for 2 weeks and probably not able to come in here. I will try my best to sneak in here and give my reports but not sure at this point.

Good luck to everyone here and let's rock people. We can do this!

                Hello ladies and gents!

I am so pleased to see so many pounds and inches melting away so soon, and EVEN MORE pleased to see so many supportive cheerleaders!

Our informal DANDR discussion starts today. Everyone is encouraged to participate, but it's not mandatory. Just post whatever comes to mind, whatever your opinions are, strong reactions you have, etc. We are all friends here.

Taken from DANDR 2002, Chapter 1, page 13:

There is no doubt in my mind that this increase in refined carbohydrates has been spurred by the media attention given to the Food Guide Pyramid, created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which made six to eleven daily servings of these wheat derivatives the basis of the pyramid. I believe that the Food Guide Pyramid's recommendations have directly contributed to the twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes we now face in this country.
There are many examples in history of things we've thought were true that we eventually realized were wrong. Remember, we once were sure the earth was flat. But we learn, make progress and can correct our missteps. Only during the last few years has a significant percentage of Americans begun to question what we've been taught about how to eat.
                So here are some questions/topics:

*When was the USDA food pyramid accepted as gold-standard, and are there any socio-economic factors contributing to this development?

*Do you think that the food pyramid will change? When do you think that will happen?

*Do you think that Atkins or Atkins principles will gain a place in the "normal" everyday diet?

*Have any of you followed this USDA guide on another program (Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc.) and actually gained weight because of the 6-11 servings of carbs?

*How do western countries (Canada, US, UK, etc.) compare with other countries in terms of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and what are the typical diets of these countries? I have heard that the French have the lowest rate of heart disease and obesity, although they eat the highest-fat diets.

                -------------------------

These are just a few prompts to get you started. Please post any questions/comments/rants/raves YOU have from chapter 1. Let's get the ball rolling!

Since the 70's it's been discussed and in the 90's came to be

*Do you think that the food pyramid will change? When do you think that will happen?
It already has changed, in 2005. They've changed the pyramid so it incorporates the need for more fruits/veggies and whole grains, unlike the original one which was non specific. Also, the new pyramid includes exercise because our country is so sedintary.

*Do you think that Atkins or Atkins principles will gain a place in the "normal" everyday diet?
I think they already have. Even if people are not following the atkins WOE, I would say lots of people incorporate "low carb" into their daily lives. Fast food restaurants are proof of that since quite a few have changed some of their menu items to accomodate low carbers.

*Have any of you followed this USDA guide on another program (Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc.) and actually gained weight because of the 6-11 servings of carbs?
I've done weight watchers in the past and lost weight, it too is a healthy way of eating, just not for me. And I would never eat 6-11 grain servings per day! That's absurd.

*How do western countries (Canada, US, UK, etc.) compare with other countries in terms of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and what are the typical diets of these countries? U.S. is the highest, for sure. In addition to the French, the japanese are also low in obesity/heart disease and they do eat rice at just about every meal. But, they don't eat junk!

                            • Re: WORK IT!: The 2007 Labor Day Challenge Thread, Sign-up and Reporting

Geez, I suddenly feel like I'm back in Econ and Biology classes again! LOL!!

*When was the USDA food pyramid accepted as gold-standard, and are there any socio-economic factors contributing to this development?

The government has been trying to tell us how to eat since the late 1800s. When some low-fat gurus started their harping in the late 1970s, the pyramids came into play. So did the explosion of health problems... Of course, the agriculture (sugar, corn and wheat) and food industry wants us to be eating like cows. I say feed the cows all the grain they want, and let me grill a slab of steak instead next to some veggies.

*Do you think that the food pyramid will change? When do you think that will happen?

With Man, nothing is constant. Since the pyramid was changed recently, it may be a while before it happens again. Most of it is political, anyway. Frankly, I don't want the goobermint telling me how to eat and how to take care of myself, thank you very much! Their stupid carb-loaded pyramid is what made me fat in the first place! For twenty-five years, I went along with their low-fat mentality, only to get larger and suffer more health problems like joint pains, insomnia, weak and paining muscles, brain fogs... What a total waste all those years were!

*Do you think that Atkins or Atkins principles will gain a place in the "normal" everyday diet?

Maybe. Hard to say. Studies keep coming out showing how effective and healthy it is, and it is how people ate decades ago. But the misinformation about Atkins is blasted everywhere. The big hitch is the addictions to sugars and white flours; a lot of people aren't ready to give them up.

At least, not until they have health issues to correct. Like diabetes... What's up with that?! The way diabetics are told to eat is low-carb! Hasn't it occurred to any of these geniuses that low-carb would have been a good preventative measure in the first place?! But nope, they still push their 300+ carb diet on the sheeple... idjits...

*Have any of you followed this USDA guide on another program (Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc.) and actually gained weight because of the 6-11 servings of carbs?

I've done WW but not necessarily followed the pyramid per se. I lost slowly on WW but felt like total CRAP. My body hates all the junk in low-fat foods. I was always hungry and craving foods, had no energy, continually felt bloated... Darn few of WW frozen meals were low in carbs. Too many of them are way too high. (Not to mention all the crummy ingredients in them.) I switched to Atkins and within a week, all that turned around. My body totally loves REAL foods!

*How do western countries (Canada, US, UK, etc.) compare with other countries in terms of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and what are the typical diets of these countries? I have heard that the French have the lowest rate of heart disease and obesity, although they eat the highest-fat diets.

I believe it states right in the book that the French are discovering our junk food. Their health has been going downhill since doing so. They sure made an interesting case study, proving what Dr. Atkins had claimed for decades.

One thing I'm going to take to heart from Chapter One is Dr. Atkins' claim that we don't need to count calories. I'm terrible about tracking numbers for all this; I need to simplify and just count carbs. If he thinks we don't need to count calories, that's good enough for me.

Terry, you're correct about the French finding our fast food irresistable! I wonder if they'll have to change that book title to "French Women Didn't Used To Get Fat..."

I am always flabbergasted that this WOL will be recommended to diabetics, but for those of us who are "just" obese, low-fat is usually prescribed. I think this WOL is one of the most effective PREVENTATIVE measures out there for obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc. The list goes on and on.

On their recent visit, my parents ARGUED with me about Atkins. I'm sitting there 80 pounds lighter, eating until satisfied, and they're arguing that my father's "DIABETIC" plan is healthier. He's allowed 9 servings of carbs per day, each serving consisting of 15g of whatever carbs he wants. If he eats something like a piece of bread that is less that 15g, he doesn't have to count it. WHAT? He also said that his nutritionist told him that he can have ice cream on rare occasions. HE IS DIABETIC for god's sake, and probably on his way to going on insulin. He already takes loads of pills.

But they came around by the end of the visit. They saw what foods I ate, they saw that I worked out, they saw that I was younger looking, they saw that my skin was clear and firm, they saw that my brain was sharp and quick-witted (one of his arguing points was that the brain needs 100g of carbs/day to survive, otherwise it begins to die or some nonsense), not to mention, 80 pounds lighter. They both apologized and said that I am the healthiest they've ever seen me, that I definitely need to keep doing what I've been doing, and that maybe THEY could learn a thing or two from the Atkins WOL.
