Yup, ketosis is like being pregnant--either you ARE or you AREN'T!!!
I've never used ketostix--I just look for other signs: appetite supression, energy, weight loss, losing inches, looser clothing, etc.
Each person has a different carb threshhold (CCLL) and ketosticks do a pretty good job of letting you know if you're getting close--they stop changing color when you're close to your CCLL. Which is great news if your CCLL is under 50. If you're eating 50g carbs or more per day, they won't change color, even if you ARE in ketosis. Some people may eat up to 100g per day and still be in ketosis.
Ketostix only tell you if you're burning fat--they don't tell you if it's fat from your food, or fat from your body. They can also give faulty readings if they're old, or if you're dehydrated. So use them if you want, but don't depend on them. Let your tape measure be your guide!
