I have read Dr. Atkins book and tried this diet last year and I am sad to say I did not follow thru. I think I was looking at it as a diet and not as a lifestyle change, which I think that it is.. I am going to try to get myself geared up for this since I don't feel like I can do the induction week this week but I think I will try to watch those carbs and start cutting them out. Can you do the induction week at anytime during say the first month that you start?
Hi Kaye..I'm not sure I understand your question. The introduction phase needs to be done first but as you said you don't think you could follow through with it this week so whenever you can then need to go through the introduction phase. I know alot of people stay on the introduction for two weeks but some do it longer and since it is becoming easier for me I plan to do the introduction longer.
I hope when you do start you have much success :dancingb: (I really like this banana)

Hi Rachel, thanks for your concern! :hug No, I haven't weighed myself yet. I try to do this every 2-4 weeks. I find the longer I wait, the more surprised I am at the numbers. They usually do go down, but I have had my share of stalls too. I will not be weighing myself again until the 15th.
I hope that induction is going well for you and that you are enjoying your new WOE! :yes

Hey there.
I'm new to the board. I started induction on 1/4. Because I don't want to become obsessed with weighing myself, I don't have a set of scales. I don't plan to buy them until I start OWL. Already I've had some wonderful results.
My engagement ring is fitting loser, I notice that I look smaller, I'm more energetic already, my eczema is clearing up, no heartburn and my sinusitis is not bothering me nearly as much. I love this Atkins!! :yes

No scales!!! The scales are my enemy and I WILL NOT become obsessed with them.

I lost 8 lbs. my first 6 days of induction, and now I am on my 11 day and haven't lost anymore. Is this because I am increasing my water intake or is it something else? Does anyone have any advice for me? :help
8 pounds in one week is just awesome. Most people lose 5-10% of their weight during the first week. This is an incredible loss. Don't weigh yourself everyday and don't forget to measure. You're doing just fine.

newbie here! Well, not really a newbie persay...did Atkins 3yrs ago and lost 44lbs from a wopping start weight of 201lbs. I've been off and on Atkins 17 times due to various things like sabatoge by family and friends. No one in my house needs this but, I do! I've gained most the weight back and over the holidays...yes in two weeks...I gained back the last 20lbs. Now, I'm were I was when I originally started.
What it comes down to is this: I have 0 support and a limited budget. (Not poor just budgeting so everyone who needs my hard earned money, get's some!) By the time the bills and what not are paid, I have about $300 left over for food. Seeing that I'm the only one in the house who needs this, it's unfare to everyone else that they can't eat what they enjoy. I have to feed them first.
Basically, I'm in NEED of doing something for me and I NEED support. I feel so guilty about thinking of myself but I can't be everything to everyone if I'm dead, right???
If someone can find it in their heart to reach out and be a mentor to little ol' me, I would be forever indebted to you!!!
BTW, contrary to popular belief, not all fat people eat constantly and eat poorly. When the protein is gone and it's another week until payday, you have to eat so, pasta it is!
After reading a great deal about the Atkins Diet especially on this message board, I figured I would try my best to lose weight and stay focused. I just started this Monday (01/10/04) and so far am not craving any sweets or grains. I really need help and support to do this diet because sometimes I feel I am not mentally strong enough to follow through with the entire program. So can someone please guide me through this? I also have a question... If I happen to crave sweets , what would be my options? And, Can I have regular whipped cream during the Induction phase? (Since, I dont know how to cook, Im not familiar with many food items)
MY goal is to lose 40 lbs..I am right now at 172lbs - ///5'6 tall
Thank you for readind my post if you did!!!
Fallinrain, Atkins is still do-able with a limited budget. You can go out and buy bags of chicken from the freezer section. They are affordable and you get alot for your money. Also, the pre-mixed salad bags in the produce section are great, since they tend to stay fresh longer than a head of lettuce. As for sabotage, if it's coming from your own household, then you need to put your foot down and stand your ground. If losing weight is important to you, it should be important to others who know you. If you have doubts about foods being offered by others, then it's best to just pass on it. Also, it sounds to me like you obviously care for your family's needs and have been putting off your own in order to provide for them. Tell them all it's time to start paying it forward by supporting and helping you in any way possible. You can do this!!!!
FocusedLaura, we are all here to support and help you in any way we can. If you ever need any support and/or advice, feel free to contact me anytime. Also, if you view the Atkins WOL as a diet, you will be more prone to cheats. If you think of it as a way of life and a healthier way of eating to accomodate your needs, then you will be more successful at it. Now, to your questions.... if you crave sweets, take 500-1000mg of L-Glutamine each time you have a craving (it tastes awful, but it does eliminate the cravings!) and you can also take 1000mcg of chromium picolinate. As for the whipped cream, it's best for you to go to the milk section and get the liquid "whipping cream" and mix up your own, or you can get the new "whipped cream" in a spray bottle from Land O' Lakes (it's made with Splenda and is low-carb. If you don't find either, try finding one that is at least sugar-free.

Hi, Oh the sabatoge. I think it is a game for family &friends. I find that planning is the key. Come up with situations where you have been sabatoged before, and come up with how you will deal with it this time before it happens again. You know atkins works because you have done it before. I have a husband who is doing atkins with me and 2 kids. They eat what I eat. It is good for the whole family to eat healthy. I get my kids the new whole wheat cereals, and sugar free pudding. I don't eat these, but they are kids and need more calories and carbs than I do. Be strong, after you start turning down food from friends and family they will get the message and quit. Just budget a weekly allowance for groceries. Then you won't run out of $ at the end of the month and give up. :joy
