I just take a multi-vitamin; should I be taking something else? Sorry if I posted where it shouldn't be.

Hey there, boopie! Like Jimmie suggested, I would add a vitamin B complex, even if your multivitamin has them listed, and flaxseed oil (capsules are fine). This is the minimum that I would suggest for good health.

Thanks for the replies. I just got some more multi-vitamins. I need to pick up a Rx for hubby, so I'll pick up the B-complex and flax oil while I'm there. Also gonna get another Dr. Atkins book; I can't find my copy.

              Thanks again!!

Dh went to the doc yesterday for leg numbness. Poly Neuropathy (old age!). At the end of the appt DH told him about the supps he's been taking. The doc said the B complex may, in fact, help with the Neuropathy! Oh yeah, and to exercise, of course!

He was very pleased at the supplements we're taking but he did recommend 800-1000 mg of D for me and 1500-2000 Calcium. We had discussed this earlier on. The ones I have now are 1200 calcium and only 200 D.

So my question Bio is....should I break this one up to twice daily, or is is okay to take the higher amounts once a day? Hopefully the latter since I'm in a once a day rhythm!

                  Hey SG!

Ideally, you want to break up your calcium supplements in two or more servings. Some research indicates that only 500 mg at a time can be absorbed, but studies are mixed on this. And speaking of absorption, you should really test your calcium supplement to see how fast it dissolves. If the supplement doesn't dissolve within 30 minutes in a small glass or dish of white vinegar, then it's not going to disslove very well in your stomach & very little will be absorbed by your intestines even with your increased intake of Vitamin D.

Also to note with calcium supplements, especially as you increase your dosage....the chances of getting constipated increases dramatically, so beware!

With vitamin D, that's a fat-soluble vitamin, so excess will get stored and not flushed away in the toliet. You should be warned, however, that you CAN get too much vitamin D and it can get to toxic levels if you take too much. Are you sure your physican said to take 800-1200 mg?? Usually, vitamin D is listed in IU (international units) which is a lot different than listing it in milligrams b/c if manufactures do list vitamin d by weight, it's in mcg (micrograms). Please double check.

Let me know if you have further questions.

I forgot to add last night that you can also check many of your vitamins at usp.org to see if they really have what they say they do & how the time it takes to dissolve. USP = United States Pharmacopeia, and they just verify supplements to help consumers. Many companies voluntarily submit their products here to get tested, but many do not as it is not required by law.

Thanks so much! I will test the calcium today, it's like a jelly horse pill so I suppose it will dissolve!

Re the D, I told him the calcium had only 200 and I didn't say IU. He just said that since I'm menopausal I need more of both.

Isn't D the new wonder vitamin that everyone should take?

Vitamin D is a great vitamin, however, too much of a good thing is just as bad as not enough. A lot of new research has come out recently & it's all very promising!

Hi Everybody! I haven't checked in for a while. I am taking my supplements though!

DH and I were already discussing what container we are going to put our vitamins in when we are packing for our trip. Yes, DH is onboard wholeheartedly with supplements, too.

Hi Cynthia! I don't have a problem with the supplements that you're taking; however, you may want to add a vitamin B complex to your regimen b/c some of the values in your multi are on the low side. I have 3 threads about Vitamin B that you may wish to read & you'll see why I recommend them.

Later on, you may with to consider taking a calcium/magnesium/etc supplement or when you're two current bottles are gone, you may wish to look for a new supplement.

FG, that's great news! Happy to hear that you DH is on the supplement bandwagon!
